OUR HISTORY Our school, which opened in 1932, is named for Phoebe Apperson Hearst, noted philanthropist, wife of Senator George Hearst, and mother of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. Mrs. Hearst was a proponent of early childhood education; a financial benefactor to Washington's Kindergarten College, where teachers were trained; and co-founder of the national Parent Teacher Association (PTA). A six-foot marble and bronze aquarium, donated by her family in her memory, still serves as a teaching tool in one of our pre-K classrooms.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS:
The Fillmore Arts Center (Weekly instruction in Music, Art, Theater, and Movement; performances and art gallery open houses)
The Kennedy Center (Performance tickets for students and "Artists in Residence" on-site at Hearst)
Sidwell Friends School (Our neighbor school across the street is a longtime supporter of Hearst Elementary, providing student mentors and participating in joint service projects. Each fall, Sidwell welcomes Hearst students to a joint Thanksgiving celebration, and generously shares its school facilities and performance spaces throughout the year.)
The Washington Home (Our neighbors at the Washington Home provide performance space and welcome our students to interact with staff and residents during an annual Literacy Parade)
