Want Be a Room Parent? One of the best ways to support your child’s class is to volunteer to be a room parent. Room parents are an important line of communication between teachers, the PTA, and the students’ parents or guardians. A room parent supports the teachers, and solicits and encourages parental involvement in classroom and school wide activities. When you volunteer to be a room parent, you are not volunteering to chaperone all of your child’s field trips or to organize all class events for the year! As a room parent, you’ll reach out to other parents to ensure the teacher has the help she or he needs. Of course, you may want to chaperone field trips or bake cupcakes for a class party, and that’s just fine. Different teachers have different expectations, depending on the age of the children in their class and the needs of the particular teacher. If you’re considering volunteering as a room parent, talk to your child’s teacher at Back to School Night (Tuesday, September 6 for 3rd-5th grade students; Wednesday, September 7 for PK-2nd grade), or sooner. Or, contact Hearst’s Room Parent Coordinator, Lisa Bender, at rp@hearstes.org. Being a room parent is a great way to get to know your child’s teacher and classmates, and other Hearst parents. And it can be one of the most rewarding ways to stay involved with your child at school this year.
