E-cycle 2016

The Hearst Elementary

Saturday, November 5th from 9am to 1pm

Hearst’s Annual E-cycle is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th from 9am to 1pm.  The Hearst E-cycle is a broader green, health, and community event that provides a place for people to recycle old electronics, batteries, computers, and the like. But it is so much more than that. It is also an opportunity for us to remind our children to reduce re-use and recycle.

This is a wonderful Community Event that stresses the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling for a cleaner, healthier environment.

  • Drop off your unused or broken electronics or metal objects for recycling ($20 for tube TVs, $5 for flat screens and $10 for hard drives)
  • Document Shred: shred sensitive documents ($5 donation per box to shred)
  • Electronics Swap: swap, donate or pick up for a donation working electronics from the Electronics Swap table
  • Bike Swap: donate, swap or pick up for a donation a child or adult bike
  • Hearst Library Book Sale: buy or donate gently used children’s and adult books to support the Hearst library
  • Adopt a new family member from The Washington Humane Society Adoption van or donate old toys, beds, blankets and food bowls
  • Visit our delicious bake sale
  • Take a bounce on the bounce house or dare to climb the Extreme Climbing Wall
  • Drop off unused diapers to be donated to DC Diaper Bank
  • “Hearst Gives a Hoot!” Drop off toiletries to the Friendship House table for the homeless

For the E-cycle to be a success, we need your help! Contact us at hearstecycle@gmail.com to volunteer.

Not only do we need volunteers throughout the day, but over the next few weeks please take a look around you home and identify items that are no longer needed and can be donated to this event rather than thrown out.  Items such as:

  • Children’s Books (please box/bag up and place outside the library door)
  • Electronics (start a pile to bring out the day of the event-see acceptable items)
  • Bikes, adult’s and children’s for the Swap (bring them the day of the event or contact us at hearstecycle@gmail.com)
  • The Washington Humane Society is collecting donations for pets in need (such as blankets, dog bowls and crates, etc.)
  • Donate something sweet to eat to the bake sale table
  • Donate toiletries to our homeless community (We will be collecting travel sized toiletries: toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, small boxes of laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, safety razors, shaving cream, floss, etc. at a designated table)
  • Save your unwanted paper for shredding
  • And of course, please tell a friend or bring a friend, and spread the word!

If it plugs in, or is metal and heavy Hearst Elementary wants to recycle it!

Please note that we cannot accept light bulbs, thermostats or smoke alarms. There is also a $20 charge to accept a CRT monitor, tube TVs or projection TV, a $5 charge for flat screen TVs, and a $10 charge for hard drive crushing.

Here is a printable list of acceptable electronic items at the E-cycle, or check the list below.
