POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Hearst Policies and Procedures at a Glance

There have been some questions that have come my way regarding three policies/procedures that are in place at Hearst.  I am hoping this document will help clarify these items.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me, Dr. Deborah Bergeron at deborah.bergeron@dc.gov

Arrival Information
  • Arrival time for students is 8:40am.  Students need to report to the old playground to line up.  If your child is attending INNIS before care they should report to Portable 3 after 7:15am.
  • Students who are eating breakfast should arrive no earlier than 8:10am.  Students should enter the building through the rear entrance, obtain their breakfast and proceed upstairs to eat.
  • Students will be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:50am.  All tardy students must report to the security desk to obtain a late slip before walking to their classroom.
  • Students and parents should use the rear entrance door to enter the building at all times.  The front door will be locked at 8:10am each morning.  It would be best to use the gate entrance to the old playground, not the driveway, to enter the building..
  • After 8am, the driveway will be closed due to limited parking spaces and no turn around for vehicles.  The driveway will reopen at 9:30am.  When using the driveway please drive carefully as students will be crossing the driveway from time to time to use the playground and for PE classes.  Do not park in the areas that designate no parking.

Dismissal Information

  • Dismissal time for students is 3:15pm.  Please ensure that you are on time to pick up your child (ren).  Students will be escorted to the office at 3:30pm.  All students who are not picked up by 3:40pm will be dropped off at INNIS and parents will be required to pay the $20 drop-off fee.  This policy has been enacted due to the lack of coverage we are able to provide.
  • During dismissal teachers will be responsible for monitoring their students to ensure that all students leave safely.  I am asking that parents refrain from conferencing with teachers until all students in the class have been dismissed or after 3:30pm.  It would be best to set up a meeting time ahead of time, since contractually teachers are off duty at 3:30pm.
  • The main school building is locked after 3:30.  If you wish to enter after 3:30, please go to the rear entrance and use the intercom system to gain access to the building.
  •
Use of 37th Street – please adhere to the new guidelines as outlined in the “Using 37th Street” document you received in the first day packet.

Volunteering Information

  • If you are interested in volunteering, you must go through the DCPS Volunteer Process.  You can find information on the DCPS website or you can email dcpsvolunteers@dc.gov or call 202-442-5447.
  • Volunteers are asked to work out a schedule with classroom teachers ahead of time or to give teachers 24 hour notice to prepare for your assistance.
