APTT 3 Step Up Day  - 5/23/16

Tomorrow, on Monday, May 23rd, we’ll be holding Step Up Day for families of students in all grade levels.  During the first part of the meeting, families will meet with their child’s current grade level teachers for a truncated APTT meeting. In the second half of the meeting, the next grade level’s teachers will talk with you about what to expect in the upcoming year.  These meetings are a great opportunity to meet other families, learn about simple summer activities to keep your child learning, and hear about what next school year may hold for your child. We hope to see you on the 23rd!

Schedule for May 23 Step Up Meetings

  • 8:15-9:15 Current PK families (meeting in library) & Current 5th grade families (meeting in art room)
  • 9:45-10:45 Current 2nd grade families (meeting in library)
  • 11:15-12:15 Current 1st grade families (meeting in art room) & CES families (meeting in library)

  • 2:15-3:15 Current 4th grade families (meeting in library) & Current K families (meeting in art room)
  • In the event of rain, childcare will be in the gym, otherwise childcare will be on the playground

Cleanliness of Playground

In order to help maintain a clean and safe space for our kids, please make sure that when on the playground, you encourage students to put their trash in trash cans and to pick up their clothes and other items.  We’ll continue to collect all clothing, book bags, and miscellaneous items left on the playground and bring everything to the lost and found at the entrance to the gym.  All items not claimed by June 17 will be donated to charity.

Water testing

Attached is a letter regarding the results of the recent water tests conducted at Hearst Elementary School.  As the letter indicates, all of the drinking water sources at Hearst are currently below the EPA threshold. However, there was one utility water device located inside the boiler room that tested above level, but it is not accessible to students.  Additionally, DCPS has worked with sister agencies across the city to identify opportunities for students to be tested for lead.  Please see the attached letter for these opportunities.

News and Announcements from Central Office

OSSE: 2016 Fellowship for Urban Education Leaders (FUEL)

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is launching the 2016 Fellowship for Urban Education Leaders (FUEL) program to provide exemplary educators, research, and policy professionals the opportunity to shape State activities and policies in DC.  The seven-week program, occurring June 27 – August 12, 2016, provides three outstanding educators and graduate students opportunities to work within the OSSE Division of Elementary, Secondary, and Specialized Education’s Teaching and Learning Department on key projects and initiatives.  Application documents are to be submitted through email to the attention of Ms. Tasha Jones atTasha.Jones@dc.govThe application and program details can be found here. If you have any questions, please contact Gimari Jones or Tasha Jones by email or at (202) 724-7878.

DCPS Parent Leaders Listserv

As parent organizations (PTO, PTA, HSA, etc.) and Local School Advisory Teams (LSAT) begin to hold elections for next year’s leadership, The Office of Family and Public Engagement (OFPE) has received a variety of elections-related questions from these groups. In order to consolidate communications with parent leaders around elections and other popular questions and allow parent leaders to share knowledge and best practices drawing from their personal experience, OFPE has created a Yahoo group for all parent organization leaders and LSAT chairs which will go live next week. The group will provide a forum for OFPE to contact all PTA and LSAT leaders together as well as provide those leaders with an online network of their peers. Please email Elias Hoffman with any questions.
