Nut-free School

Nut_free_school.jpg

Hearst is a nut-free school. Students can bring in foods that have been processed in a facility that processes tree nuts, so long as those foods are for personal consumption.  Please remind your children that they should not be sharing food in the cafeteria.  In order to minimize the risk of cross-contact issues that can result with nut oils/residue left on surfaces, our staff is being extra vigilant about cleaning surfaces after eating and ensuring that students wash their hands after eating. For ideas for nut-free lunches and snacks, visit: http://school.familyeducation.com/slideshow/lunch/71131.html or http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2013/10/07/nut-free-school-lunch-ideas/

Acorns

You may have noticed that the soccer field is overflowing with acorns right now.  Many kids are collecting and examining the acorns while others have determined that acorn battles are a good way to pass recess time.  We have spoken to kids about the dangers of throwing acorns at each other and ask that you also remind your children that this is not safe.

Silent Lunch

Many of you have reached out about silent lunch in the cafeteria. While we have reserved the final five minutes of each lunch as a silent period in order to give students time to finish up their lunches prior to returning to class, a full 30-minute silent lunch is not something that should be occurring at Hearst.   I will speak with all of our staff on lunch duty to make sure this is clear.

Bullying Article

October is Bullying Prevention Month. In honor of this, I’ll be sharing links in each weekly update to interesting and informative articles about bullying.  Here’s the first article: http://www.edutopia.org/blog/cultivate-a-bully-free-community-megan-mccarter
