Update 2/12/17

POSTED ON
February 13
Good evening Owls,

Thanks to everyone who came out on Wednesday to talk with Principal Albright and Chancellor Wilson. It was impressive that families of students of all ages, as well as several staff members, attended Principal Albright’s session to learn more about Deal Middle School and their programming. Chancellor Wilson’s session gave families and staff the opportunity to share their ideas about Hearst and DCPS, as well as ask questions of our new Chancellor. Chancellor Wilson wrote afterwards and said “I was impressed with how strongly families felt that their children are getting what’s needed from an instructional and social emotional standpoint at Hearst.  It’s exactly what I want to hear.”  It was a great night at Hearst and I thank you for your support and advocacy on behalf of our kids, staff, and school, and schools across DC.

Hope you’re having a great weekend,

Jen

Update 1/2/17

POSTED ON
January 02
Good evening Owls,

I hope that you’ve had a wonderful winter break and that your 2017 is off to a great start! Our team has been hard at work over the break to ensure that the building is shiny, clean, and ready for everyone's return on Tuesday.  The transition back to school routines after a break can sometimes be a bit tough on kids so tomorrow we're planning to start the day with time for our kids to reconnect with their classmates and our staff and revisit their hopes and dreams for 2017.  Please make sure that your kids are on time tomorrow morning so that they don't miss these activities to help them transition back to school. I'm looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow morning!

Happy New Year,

Jen

Quick Updates

·         Thanks to all who made our Holiday Luncheon a success! The kids truly enjoyed the luncheon and gave it big thumbs up all around. Our staff is also very appreciative of the time they had together to gather before the break to eat, laugh, and spend time with one another. Our Hearst volunteers are the best!!

·         Welcome back to Susan Crawley and thanks to Fynn M’Llyr for working with our students this fall while Susan was out on maternity leave.

·         Please see attached for last week's NW Current dispatch, from the K-1 CES classroom Perfect Parrots.

·         If it feels like it is less than 32 degrees with the wind chill and/or it’s raining, we’ll be inside for arrival, recess, and dismissal. If you’re unsure whether it’s indoor or outdoor arrival or dismissal, please look for the red or green signs in the upper left corner of the main door and upper right corner of the back door.  Red indicates indoor arrival/dismissal and green indicated outdoor arrival/dismissal.

·         Scholastic Book Fair Update - We sold $9717.35 in merchandise ($700 more than last year woo-hoo!!).   After Scholastic has been paid, we will have $5345.09 to spend on books and other materials through the Scholastic catalog to supplement our existing library resources.  Thank you for all of your purchases and giving back to Hearst in this way!

POSTED ON
December 11
A message from HEARST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Good evening Owls,

Our kids at Hearst are amazing and while everyone in the Hearst community knows this to be true, it’s always nice to have someone else reaffirm this.  On Friday we had visitors to Hearst who had never been to our school before.  These visitors walked away so impressed with our kids, their collaboration, their empathy, their focus, and their confidence. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of working with your amazing kids and for your continued partnership.

My best,

Jen

Quick Updates

·         Principal Albright from Deal MS will be at Hearst from 5:00-6:00pm on December 14th, prior to the 6pm PTA meeting that evening. He will share information about Deal, describe their approach to academics and student growth, and then have a panel of 6th graders (alumni from Hearst) take questions from our community. If you’re considering Deal for your child, please attend the information session.

·         Please see attached for the Hearst dispatch from the Northwest Current about 3rd grade science and social studies.

·         Thanks to everyone who donated to the book and toy drive on behalf of Central Union Mission.  The 193 toys and books donated by Hearst families will make the holidays brighter for kids across the District.

·         Thanks to all the shoppers and volunteers at the Book Fair! Almost $10,000 worth of books were sold with more than $700 of that coming back to the school to help us expand our library collection. Thanks for your support!
