Update 5/28/17

POSTED ON
June 01
Good afternoon Owls,

What a full week last week, and what a way to end the week with such a fun Field Day. Thanks to Mr. Coleman and everyone who made it a success! Although we have a short week coming up, there’s a lot happening including multiple field trips, two focus groups on Wednesday, the musical, a visit from the Serbian ambassador, and Screen on the Green.  I hope you all have a great weekend and we'll see you on Tuesday!

My best,

Jen

Quick Updates

  • Thanks to Keri Sikich for filming the chorus performance at Friday’s community meeting. Here's the link to the video: https://goo.gl/photos/WA2U1qgzY7ZNnw4s9
  • The Principal Chat on Friday, June 2, will be held from 8:45-9:15 in Mr. Herrera’s room. If you were unable to make it to one of the focus groups this month, we’ll be discussing core values at the principal chat.
  • We’ve had an uptick in the number of kids making after school play dates/plans for themselves and trying to convince our staff that their normal after school plans have changed.  Please make sure that if your child’s after school plans have changed, you notify the office and your child’s teacher.  Also be sure to confirm these plans with your child before s/he comes to school so that we’re not all scrambling to call home at dismissal to clarify after school plans.

Good afternoon Owls,

Despite not having a full week of school with kids, last week was certainly full and this week we’re looking forward Spirit Week and Field Day on Friday.  The weather forecast is calling for showers most of the week, so time outdoors on Friday will certainly be a welcome relief from the possibility of indoor recess.

My best,

Jen

Thanks for your continued support and I hope you’re having a great weekend,

Jen

Hope you’re having a great weekend,

Update 4/23/17

POSTED ON
April 23
Good afternoon Owls,

I hope that you’ve had a wonderful spring break and that our Owls had lots of time to relax, play, and spend time with loved ones. It’s hard to believe but we only have eight weeks left in this school year.  Please help us ensure that these last weeks of school are great by making sure that your kids maintain their regular eating and sleeping routines during these longer days. We will spend some time tomorrow reinforcing our school routines and expectations to ensure that the transition back from break is a smooth one and appreciate your support in doing the same at home.

See you tomorrow morning,

Jen

Quick Updates

·         Portrait Day at Hearst will be Tuesday, May 9, 2017.

·         The Deal Middle School team will be at Hearst on Wednesday, May 10 from 3:30-6:30 to enroll current Hearst 5th graders.

·         Attached are resources shared at the parent event on Wednesday, April 12, focused on supporting kids with anxiety, stress, anger, and coping skills.

·         As a reminder, because of the large number of students on the soccer field during outdoor arrival, students are not to play soccer or football at arrival time.  During inclement arrival in the gym, the same holds true, with the addition of basketball. Know that this measure was put in place in the fall after several students were injured inadvertently and while playing during arrival times.

Update 4/9/17

POSTED ON
April 10
Good afternoon Owls,

The week ahead is a busy one at Hearst with visitors coming to the school from PBS, our first track meet of the season on Monday, multiple field trips, an assembly, and a PTA meeting.  As we've gotten closer to spring break, there has been a slight uptick in the number of students coming to the main office as a result of a conflict with a peer in the classroom, at recess, or at lunch.  We will continue to hold our students to our high academic and behavioral expectations this week and reinforce the problem-solving and emotion-management techniques that students are learning in the Second Step lessons.  Below is additional information about one of the strategies we're teaching kids and I hope that you will reinforce this strategy at home so that this week can be a smooth one for all of our Owls.

Thanks and have a wonderful afternoon,

Jen

A message from HEARST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Good morning Owls,

Thanks to everyone for another great week at Hearst.  These next two weeks before spring break can be challenging on kids and on us as adults as spring fever is starting to show itself. We’ve had quite a long stretch between winter and spring breaks and everyone naturally may be feeling a bit tired from all their hard work.  Please ensure that your kids are getting their rest and staying healthy.  If your child has allergies and needs to take medication at school, be sure that Nurse Carter has updated medical forms and permissions from doctors so that we can treat your child. These forms can be found here: https://dcps.dc.gov/health. Have a wonderful day and see you tomorrow!

My best,

Jen

Thanks to everyone for a great week at Hearst and a special thanks to those of you who came out to the auction last night. It was wonderful to see so many of you supporting Hearst and having a great time while doing so.  It was a record-setting evening, with more money being raised last night than at past auctions and on behalf of the students and staff, thank you so much for your support!

Have a wonderful evening, may your NCAA brackets not be entirely busted, and see you tomorrow!
