This week was very busy for our 2nd – 5th grade students. They took their first round of Paced Interim Assessments (PIAs) in math and reading. The assessments were given with hardly a blink. Students worked hard and teachers were prepared to proctor. Our 4th and 5th graders got to pilot the new online assessments in reading. On day one we had some technical issues, but they were fixed quickly and we took both assessments with no problems.
Thanks to Ms Walker and Mr. Coleman for their hard work coordinating the PIAs. It was a very smooth process!
New Staff Highlight
William Boone has been with DCPS for a few years and came to Hearst ready to help us keep our building shiny and tidy! If you’ve met Mr. Boone you know he’s a mild mannered guy who is easy to talk to. He interacts with our students in a positive way. Perhaps his experience coaching football and mentoring students comes in handy here at Hearst!
This year we are working with Flamboyan to increase our family engagement in academic areas. Part of this work includes holding APTT style conferences instead of the typical 15 minutes conferences on conference day. Most teachers will NOT have typical conferences on 10/21. Instead, on 10/24 there will be two choice sessions. One at 4:00 and one at 6:00. These sessions will enable teachers to give parents more comprehensive information regarding their students’ achievement and how they can work with their kids at home.
