News and Announcements from Central Office

Clarification on SY15-16 Snow Day Policy & SY16-17 Calendars – Please Distribute to Parents

Due to the 2.5 snow days this winter, there has been some reasonable confusion as to how many days must be made up. The attached letter clarifies that the school year will be extended one day to Friday, June 17. We are also ready to announce the SY16-17 calendars. Please note that there are two different calendars – one for the 11 schools following anExtended Year calendar, and one for the majority of our schools following a traditional calendar. Please share the letter and appropriate calendar with your families. You can find the letter online. Translations in French, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Amharic will be available later next week and posted to the website. For questions, contact [email protected].

Reminder: Elementary Ed Tech & STEM Summer Camp

The Educational Technology and Library Programs Division in the Office of Teaching and Learning is hosting an Elementary Ed Tech & STEM Summer Camp for rising students in grades 3-5. This camp will be held from July 5-29 at Simon Elementary from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The camp will provide students with inquiry-based activities grounded in technology as they explore the concepts of design and motion in science, engineering, math, and coding. Students will explore through experiments and multiple trials how forces like gravity, friction, and air resistance work against motion.  Students will use these learned concepts to design objects that can perform to certain specifications. Space is limited to 50 students. Click herefor more information. To register, click here. For questions, contact Sakon Kieh or Dewayne McClary.

The Washington Mystics are offering a complimentary ticket free of charge with the purchase of an adult ticket during their May 6th game (11:30am @ Verizon Center). Kids Day free tickets are now available! Adult tickets are only $15! This would be great day for families to do something fun and engaging with their kids while they are out of school. Kids will be able to bring their own lunches into the building and bus parking will be available for those who need it right in front of the Verizon Center. Just arrive early for lots of fun! For more information, see the attached flyer (“2016 Mystics Kids Day Flyer”) or contact[email protected] or at (202) 527-7945.
