Happy Saturday Owls!
Thank you for another great week at Hearst! Enjoy the extra day off this weekend and see you bright and early on Tuesday.
My best,
Jen
Quick Updates
- In order to streamline the reporting of absences, please send notes regarding student absences to [email protected]. This hearstes.org address automatically forwards to Ms. Hinchey, Ms. Johnson, and Ms. Carroll, so it’s not necessary to cc their personal email accounts. Thanks!
- Picture day is this Thursday, September 8. Order forms were sent home on Friday for all students. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you did not receive one.
- Our final installation of art is scheduled to occur this week near the front plaza steps. We don’t anticipate the need to move our afternoon dismissal locations because of this, but if we do, we’ll be sure to let you know.
- Our Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 21, from 6-8pm. So that we can ensure we have appropriate childcare staffing, please sign up for childcare using the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScte2VufSdXU3998rfw8bQwfHhUTasT3dj-MsCLEmyUAhI1DQ/viewform.
News and Announcements
PARCC Results
Our kids and staff worked hard last year and there is a lot of celebrate as our kids’ scores are up in every category! We know that there is work to do around closing our achievement gaps and designing instruction that meets each of our learners’ unique needs will again be a focus for us this year. We’ll talk more about how we’re doing that at Back to School Night on September 21. If your child was in 3rd or 4th grade last year, please know that individual student score reports are being delivered to the school in the coming weeks and will be sent home by September 19, if not sooner. September 19 is when you can expect to receive beginning of year math and ELA assessment reports for students in K-5th grade, which we’ll be sending home in one package this year. If you haven’t seen our PARCC results yet, please visit: http://results.osse.dc.gov/school/258/assessment/1/proficiency/4.
Morning Arrival Routine
We’ve changed our morning arrival routine this year and after lining up, all classes move into the building and go directly to their classrooms. Each morning, two students are selected to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and Owl Pledge over the intercom and we hope to give every Owl who wants to do so the opportunity to recite the pledges over the intercom at least once this year. Please know that although we encourage students to stand and recite the pledges, we do not require it. If you’d like to help your child learn the words of the pledges, they are below.
Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Owl Pledge
I am a Hearst Owl and today I pledge to practice ownership, fellowship, leadership, and scholarship. Hoot! Hoot!

News and Announcements from Central Office
Students with Dietary Restrictions
With the new school year and new vendors feeding students, it is imperative that any student with dietary restrictions complete the proper form and return to the school nurse/send to Food and Nutrition Services as quickly as possible so proper accommodations can be made. Forms can be found on the website.
Cornerstones Fliers
This week you should have received fliers about Cornerstone projects (also attached). The fliers are designed to inform families of some of the Cornerstones lessons and projects students will engage with this year, and to encourage conversations between students and families about that learning.
Encourage Families to Attend Engagement Meetings with the Deputy Mayor of Education (DME) (8/30, 9/7, 9/14)
The Office of Family and Public Engagement has partnered with the DME to support community engagement on how DCPS can continue to improve through a Chancellor transition. This series of meetings will provide parents and community members the opportunity to provide input on the factors that the Mayor should consider when selecting a new DCPS Chancellor and inform the priorities the new Chancellor should focus. These meetings are projected to draw large numbers of attendees and we want your school community to be represented. To ensure your school community has an opportunity to attend, if you have your Back to School Night on the same night of one of the meetings closest to your school, encourage your families to attend an alternate meeting date even if its farther away. Too often, existing parent voices are not represented at citywide meetings and we want this time to be different. Citywide meetings will take place at Roosevelt, Eastern, and Savoy on 8/30, 9/7, and 9/14 respectively. Please send the attached flyer (Citywide Engagement Flyer_Chancellor Search) home with students today. For information on the Chancellor selection process,
visit http://dcpsrising.dc.gov/ or contact us at [email protected].
