Weekly Update 8/20/16

A message from HEARST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Good evening Hearst Owls,

After a busy week of preparation, we're ready and excited to welcome all of our K-5 students on Monday morning.  We’re also welcoming several new staff members this year and I hope that you’ll take a moment on Monday and throughout the week to say hello. Sara Addeo will be joining Ashley Boyle in first grade, Dylan Stacey is our new 3rd grade math teacher, Rachel Greenberg is our new 4th grade ELA teacher, and Emily Loughead has joined us as our new 5th grade ELA teacher.  We’re happy to welcome MaryEllenMacek as our 4th and 5th grade special education resource teacher, Brenda Nishimura as our school psychologist, Andre Short as our math specialist, and Shona Forbes as our occupational therapist. Susan Crawley, Hearst’s art teacher, gave birth to a beautiful baby boy this summer and we’re in the process of hiring a long-term substitute to teach art while Susan is on maternity leave. Lastly, it’s with a heavy heart that I share that Shaun Moe recently decided that he will not be returning to Hearst because of family commitments.  We’ve hired an experienced music teacher with a choral and performance background and she will hopefully be starting in the first week of school.  Please know that I’ll share additional information about our two newest staff members prior to the start of their first day with students.

On Monday morning, staff will be on duty to receive students beginning at 8:15 on the upper field if the weather is good and in the gymnasium if it rains.  Students are also welcome to head to the cafeteria as early as 8:15 if they would like to eat breakfast.  At 8:35 staff will blow a whistle and students should move to line up with their homerooms.  The line up locations have changed this year and we’ll have signs and staff members directing students to their correct lines.

We know that many families want to drop off supplies on Monday and you'll be able to do so by following your child’s class to his or her classroom and placing the supplies in the hallway outside the classroom door.  So that each classroom can get their school day routines started as quickly as possible, the custodial team will move supplies into classrooms later in the day when students are at lunch and recess.

Finally, as promised attached is the 2016-2017 Parent Handbook. It is filled with general information about our curriculum, student supports, and family engagement, as well as specific information regarding many logistical items about which you may have questions.

As a reminder, if you can join us today anytime between 10am and 2pm for our Hearst Beautification Day, we’d love to have your help in completing those final tasks on our to-do lists.  Today is also a great time to meet new and returning students, families, and staff, as well as drop off registration paperwork, medical forms, and school supplies. Thank you for your support of our Hearst community and I look forward to seeing you later this morning/on Monday!

My best,

Jen
